Trichuris suis therapy in Crohn's disease.
BACKGROUND Crohn's disease is common in highly industrialised Western countries where helminths are rare and uncommon in less developed areas of the world where most people carry worms. Helminths diminish immune responsiveness in naturally colonised humans and reduce inflammation in experimental colitis. Thus exposure to helminths may help prevent or even ameliorate Crohn's disease. AIMS The ...
متن کاملPotential danger in the medical use of Trichuris suis for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
To the Editor: The commentary by Das regarding the paper of Summers et al on the use of the pig pathogen, Trichuris suis, as a treatment of inflammatory bowel disease raises some important questions. We have been aware of this treatment since 1999, when at an AGA meeting, a poster prompted one of us to question the safety of it. Summers et al have repeatedly spoken of T. suis as noninvasive. In...
متن کاملA Randomised, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Trial of Trichuris suis ova in Active Crohn’s Disease
Background and Aims To investigate the efficacy and safety of three different dosages of embryonated, viable eggs of Trichuris suis [TSO] versus placebo for induction of remission in mildly-to-moderately active ileocolonic, uncomplicated Crohn's disease [CD]. Methods Adults with active CD [n = 252] randomly received six fortnightly doses of 250, 2500, or 7500 TSO/15 ml suspension/day [TSO 250...
متن کاملTrichuris suis ova: testing a helminth-based therapy as an extension of the hygiene hypothesis.
The hygiene hypothesis, which was put forward more than 20 years ago by Strachan, proposes that the recent increase in allergic and autoimmune diseases is due to increasing hygiene standards. Since then, numerous epidemiologic and animal studies have provided support for this hypothesis and showed that certain microorganisms, helminths in particular, have immunomodulatory effects. More recently...
متن کاملSerum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BNDF) in multiple sclerosis patients with Trichuris suis ova therapy
We previously analysed clinical and immunological parameters under Trichuris suis ova (TSO) therapy in four patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. The serum Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels of these four patients were assessed before, during and after therapy with TSO and showed significant decrease of BDNF during TSO therapy (p < 0.05).
